Textbook: Genki 1 (3rd edition). The National Baseball Hall of Fame will order this book for you if you do not have it.
Museum staff will gain foundational Japanese language skills tailored to welcoming and assisting Japanese visitors. The program focuses on essential phrases, greetings, and conversational basics, while also emphasizing cultural etiquette and hospitality ("Omotenashi"). By the end of the course, staff will be able to confidently interact with Japanese-speaking visitors, enhancing their experience with culturally informed communication and professionalism. Participants will be able to:
Introduce themselves and others
Provide basic information about oneself, including where one is from and where one lives
Express likes and desires, such as "I like Japan," and "I want to visit Nara and Osaka."
Understand the common grammatical expression: "X wa Y desu."
Use verbs in the present tense, such as "I study Japanese at the museum"
Use "this/that/which" and "here/there/over there/where"
Welcome visitors to the museum and engage in polite conversation, all within a museum context.
Describe exhibits in simple terms
Offer assistance to visitors, including giving basic directions (e.g. where is the exhibit, bathroom, restaurant, etc.)
Understand Japanese etiquette, protocol, and cultural nuances.
